Welcoming progress in South Sudan and Sudan since the beginning of 2021, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, urged the two governments to make use of positive momentum to resolve their conflict through peaceful means on the basis of international law and the UN Charter.

He shared his concern about the humanitarian situation in Abyei and attacks on UNISFA, and emphasized the importance of ensuring safety for the UNISFA force. He asked the governments of Sudan and South Sudan to allow UNISFA to carry out its tasks and to set up joint institutions in line with resolutions of the UNSC.

Mr. Quy praised the UN, organisations, and regional countries for helping Sudan and South Sudan peacefully manage the Abyei issue and lauded efforts by UNISFA and the UN Mine Action Service to deal with humanitarian challenges related to bombs and landmines in Abyei.
