The move violated Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and continental shelf as established in the provisions of the 1982 United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to which both Vietnam and China are parties. In an interview with VOV in Hanoi, Dr Umnova Irina Anatolyevna of the Russian Justice University of the Federal Supreme Court, said China’s activities completely go against the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and efforts to settle disputes by peaceful means in Southeast Asia. She said that after the incident, Vietnam should call for international support, including Russia, European countries and international organizations, like the UN, to protect its interests in the East Sea. International voices against the Chinese violation of Vietnam’s sovereign right and jurisdiction right are important. The international community should ask China to respect rights of related parties, promote negotiations and compliance with international law, said Dr Umnova Irina Anatolyevna. Vietnam should persistently uphold its view to settle disputes by peaceful means and oppose the use of force, she added.
