Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam, and Ambassador Dennis Francis Smith, Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the United Nations (UN), on behalf of the two governments, signed a joint statement in New York on the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

Under the agreement, the two countries will exchange diplomatic representatives at the ambassador-level under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

With the establishment of diplomatic relations with Trinidad and Tobago, Vietnam now has official diplomatic relations with all 35 countries in the Americas and 192 countries worldwide, demonstrating Vietnam's foreign policy of diversification, multilateralisation, and attaching importance to relations with Latin America and the Caribbean.
