Giang acknowledged McAuliff’s opinions at UN forums on major international issues.

McAuliff has befriended Vietnam since 1975 when Vietnam's observer mission to the UN was established.
He participated in the anti-Vietnam war movement in the US in the late 1960s and has visited Vietnam multiple times.
In 1975, McAuliff founded the Fund for Reconciliation and Development which has carried out charity work and lobbied the US Government to improve ties with Vietnam.
