In his address, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Vietnam’s Permanent Representative to the UN, said that climate change is a multi-dimensional challenge that affects the environment, economy, and society, as well as increases risks to global peace and security.
He proposed the UNSC to take holistic approaches to address the main causes of conflict, balance traditional and non-traditional security challenges, and make climate change risk analysis a duty of peacekeeping missions and special political missions.
The UNSC should closely coordinate mechanisms such as the UN Convention Framework on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement and strengthen cooperation with national and regional initiatives on climate change to effectively respond to emerging issues, the Vietnamese diplomat said.
Ambassador Giang repeated Vietnam’s recommendation to establish a comprehensive database system on the multidimensional impacts of climate change and sea level rise to aid global response efforts. He affirmed that Vietnam will continue to support and actively participate in discussions and initiatives related to climate change.
