At the meeting, Mr. Ngoc reported in detail on China’s illegal deployment of its oil rig and more than 130 ships, at 80 nautical miles deeper in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone.

Ngoc said China’s acts have seriously violated international law, the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea as well as the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea that China also committed to. This has threatened peace, stability, maritime security and freedom in the East Sea.

Deputy Foreign Minister Ngoc affirmed Vietnam’s consistent stance to resolve disputes in peaceful measures in line with international law. Vietnam highly appreciates friendship with neighboring countries including China. Vietnam has kept restraint, shown good will and used dialogue channels to restore peace and stability in the region. Vietnam called on members of the Non-Aligned Movement to show solidarity and bring into full play the role and responsibility of the Movement to deal with challenges of its member countries and keep peace in the world.

Member countries including India, Timor Leste, Nepal, Nigeria, Zambia, Jamaica and Nicaragua stressed the need to comply with the basic principles of the Movement including respecting the international law and United Nations Charter. The participating countries agreed on the meeting’s documents on the East Sea situation proposed by the ASEAN.
