Vietnam renews commitment to civil and political rights

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnam always identifies the people as the center, the driving force, and the ultimate goal of development, based on which Vietnam places great importance on and is committed to seriously fulfilling its obligations under international human rights conventions to which it is a party, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), said Vietnam’s senior diplomat.

Ambassador Mai Phan Dung, Head of the Vietnamese Delegation in Geneva, said on behalf of the Vietnamese delegation attending the dialogue on its country report on the implementation of ICCPR held on Monday and Tuesday at the 144th session of the Human Rights Committee in Geneva, Switzerland.

The delegation comprises of representatives from nine agencies, including the Supreme People’s Court, the Supreme People’s Procuracy, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Committee for Ethnic Minority and Religious Affairs, and the Government Office.

According to Ambassador Dung, Vietnam is always steadfast in pursuing an independent, self-reliant, peaceful, cooperative, and development-oriented foreign policy, engages in comprehensive and extensive international integration, and is a friend, a reliable partner, and a responsible member of the international community.

The ambassador added that during the dialogue, Vietnam has shared its good national practices, promoted issues of common interest to the international community, and received positive recognition from its partners.
