These measures are expected to minimize the impact of climate change and biodiversity loss because the world is losing wetlands three times faster than forests.
According to Vietnam’s Biodiversity Conservation Agency, Vietnam has nearly 12 million hectares of wetlands, accounting for 37% of the country’s total land. Vietnam became the 50th signatory of the Convention on Wetlands, known as the Ramsar Convention, in 1989 and was also the first in Southeast Asia to do so.
Vietnam has issued many documents related to wetland management, creating a legal basis for the management and sustainable development of wetlands in the country. Vietnam has also implemented activities to conserve and wisely use wetlands, raise awareness and responsibility of the community in using and protecting wetlands.
The Prime Minister last November approved a national action plan to conserve and sustainably use of wetlands until 2030.
