Regarding hydropower projects on the main streams of the Mekong River, Quang elaborated Vietnam’s view that only after thorough environmental impact studies are completed will the plant be built. Vietnam proposed that Laos join other members of the Mekong River Commission to carry out the studies. The two ministers exchanged views on the Sayabury plant’s environmental impact. They also discussed future cooperation plans, focusing on information sharing, environmental protection, and effective management and use of the Mekong River’s water resources. Both countries are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Vietnam-Laos diplomatic ties, the 35th anniversary of the Friendship and Co-operation Treaty, and Vietnam-Lao Friendship Year 2012.

During the visit, the Vietnamese officials met with Laos’ Prime Minister Thongsing Thammavong and reported an earlier session’s outcomes.
