At a conference in Da Lat City on Friday, Vu Viet Anh, Director of the Consular Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, insisted on the importance of the GCM agreement.

He said that as more and more Vietnamese citizens go abroad and foreigners come to Vietnam to work and live, it’s necessary for the country to realize international commitments compatible to its laws and conditions to protect the rights of migrants.

“To avoid the consequences relating to human lives or national economies, signatories agreed to design the comprehensive global agreement on migration. From 2016 to 2018, negotiations were held to find a common solution. Since the beginning, Vietnam has greatly contributed its past experience and input for the future in dealing with issues relating to migration,” said Mr. Viet Anh.

Participants discussed the prevention and fight against human trafficking, communications measures, GCM targets, the implementation of the agreement at the global level, and  the dovetailing of migration and UN Millenium Development goals.

The event was held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in coordination with the International Organisation for Migration.
