In a Wednesday press briefing, Deputy Foreign Minister Pham Quang Vinh said the two sides agreed to enhance the strategic partnership, increase delegation exchanges at all levels, and foster the all-round bilateral co-operation including politics, economics, defense, and science and technology. Vinh said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi considers Vietnam the most important partner in India’s “Look East” and “Act East” policies.
The two sides agreed to foster bilateral economic co-operation as a strategic target, which is expected to generate 15 billion USD by 2020. Modi said India is willing to provide Vietnam with a credit loan worth 300 million USD to diversify input materials for some economic sectors and open markets for Vietnamese investment and products.
In terms of security and defence, the two sides agreed to maintain regular delegation exchange and information sharing.
On the East Sea issue, the two sides will co-operate in building mechanisms to ensure peace, security, stability, co-operation, development, and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea. India promises to continue collaborating with Vietnam in oil and gas exploration and exploitation at sea. India also supports Vietnam and ASEAN’s stance in the East Sea issue, which resolves all disputes peacefully in line with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea, heading to the signing of the Code of Conduct of Parties in the East Sea.
