(VOVworld) – Vietnam will maintain a reasonably low birth rate, reduce the gender birth imbalance, and develop Vietnamese people’s physical strength to improve the quality of the workforce for Vietnam’s future sustainable development. The targets were set for this year’s communication campaign in response to World Population Day (July 11), Vietnam Population Day (December 26), and International Day of the Girl Child (October 11). This year, 3,000 officials have received training in consultation and communication skills to raise public awareness of population and family planning.

At a conference on Tuesday to review the work in 2014 and discuss the 2015 plan, Nguyen Van Tan, Deputy Head of the General Department for Population and Family Planning, delved more into Vietnam’s target: “2015 is the deadline year for Vietnam to limit its population to 93 million, slow the population growth rate to 1%, and reduce the total fertility rate to 1.9. We hope to maintain the contraceptive prevalence rate at 70% and decrease the gender birth ratio to 113 boys per 100 girls. Realizing these goals will require the joint efforts of all sectors at all levels, which will create an impetus to reach the targets of the National Strategy on Population and Reproductive Health until 2020.”
