At the meeting, Tam updated Thistlethwaite on new developments in the bilateral cooperation since the two countries upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's official visit to Australia in March.
He also told his host of the situation of the Vietnamese community in Australia and asked the Australian side to continue creating favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community in the country.
Data from the Australian Department of Education show that as of April this year, more than 33,500 Vietnamese students are studying in the country, up 46% against the previous period. The number of Vietnamese students studying in Australia accounts for 5% of foreign students studying here and ranks 5th in the list of countries with the most students studying in Australia.
