Vietnam calls on ASEAN to focus on regional peace, security

(VOVWORLD) - The ASEAN Political-Security Community Council (APSC) and the ASEAN Coordinating Council (ACC) convened in Singapore on Tuesday to review ASEAN cooperation and complete reports for ASEAN’s leaders. The meetings were part of preparations for the 33rd ASEAN Summit and related meetings.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh led the Vietnamese delegation. Mr. Minh urged ASEAN countries to continue to enhance solidarity and resilience and persevere with traditional principles and methods while being flexible and creative in dealing with arising challenges.

He underscored the need for ASEAN to focus on regional peace and security and maintaining its central role, and to continue to reform processes and procedures, improve its capacity to respond to emergencies, and increase coordination among agencies.

Deputy Prime Minister Minh said ASEAN should adhere to agreed principles, make efforts to ensure peace, security and stability in the East Sea, abide by international law, exercise self-restraint, not militarise or act to complicate the situation, address disputes via peaceful means on the basis of international law, fully and effectively implement the DOC, and promptly adopt the more effective COC.

Mr. Minh said he supports improving the ASEAN apparatus, creating favorable conditions for travel, generating more international working and studying opportunities, and fostering a start-up spirit among women and youths.
