Vietnam calls for complete elimination of nuclear weapons

(VOVWORLD) - Completely eliminating nuclear weapons remains an absolute guarantee to prevent the use or threat to use nuclear weapons, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Representative Mission of Vietnam to the UN said at a high-level meeting in New York to commemorate the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, on Tuesday.

He underscored the need to strengthen disarmament, arms control, and anti-proliferation mechanisms globally while calling on countries to fully implement relevant obligations, including the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

Giang said that to build trust and friendly relations among nations, countries need to strengthen dialogues and discussions rather than the nuclear deterrence doctrine.

Ambassador Giang reaffirmed Vietnam's consistent policy on anti-proliferation and nuclear disarmament, aiming to completely eliminate nuclear weapons, and committed to keep Southeast Asia free from nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.

At the same time, Vietnam welcomes countries possessing nuclear weapons to sign and ratify without reservation the Protocol to the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty (SEANWFZ).
