Vietnam, Bhutan chart new course for stronger partnership

(VOVWORLD) - Vietnamese Party General Secretary To Lam and King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan agreed on Tuesday that friendship, cultural similarities, and shared development philosophies form a crucial foundation for advancing bilateral ties and contributing to regional and global peace, stability, and development.

King Wangchuck, on a State visit to Vietnam, said Bhutan considers Vietnam one of its key partners in Southeast Asia and hopes to expand multifaceted cooperation while learning from Vietnam’s development experience.

The two leaders emphasized the need to promote coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums, particularly at the United Nations. Party leader Lam welcomed Bhutan’s efforts to strengthen cooperation with ASEAN.

At a meeting the same day with King Wangchuck, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh proposed boosting visits and exchanges at all levels, considering new bilateral cooperation mechanisms, and expediting the signing of agreements.

He urged stronger economic connectivity to facilitate greater market access, noting that Vietnam is ready to export food, consumer goods, building materials, electronics, and components to Bhutan while importing Bhutanese products.

PM Chinh also suggested expanding cooperation in security, cybersecurity, and emerging areas such as spiritual tourism, organic agriculture, and traditional medicine. He called for the early establishment of direct air routes to foster cultural exchange and people-to-people ties.

Both sides agreeing to maintain close communication and coordination at multilateral forums. Vietnam welcomed Bhutan’s readiness to engage more practically with ASEAN and other regional mechanisms.

Later, at his meeting with King Wangchuck, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man emphasized that Vietnam attaches great importance to its friendship with Bhutan and expressed confidence that bilateral relations will continue to grow and reach new heights.
