Vietnam affirms commitment to implementing Convention Against Torture

(VOVWORLD) - An international workshop  on introducing the Second Periodic Report of Vietnam under the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment was held in Ho Chi Minh City on Thursday.

The event was co-organized by the Ministry of Public Security’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Department of Legislation and Administrative and Judicial Reform, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Vietnam.

Speaking at the event, Major General Nguyen Van Ky, Deputy Director of the Department of Foreign Affairs, highlighted Vietnam’s commitment to the Convention, which it joined on March 17, 2015. He noted that Vietnam has actively fulfilled its obligations under the treaty, including preparing and submitting its National Reports. The second report, submitted to the Convention Committee, is awaiting notification for its presentation and defense.

Major General Ky emphasized that drafting and defending the National Reports is a key responsibility, showcasing Vietnam’s dedication to its commitments. However, he stressed the importance of raising public awareness about the Convention and Vietnam's efforts to implement it, as well as promoting research to ensure human rights are upheld in alignment with the Convention’s principles.

The event highlighted Vietnam’s ongoing efforts to align national practices with international standards, affirming its dedication to upholding human rights and fulfilling its treaty obligations.
