Speaking at a UN peacekeeping forum held by Vietnam’s Peacekeeping Center on Wednesday in Hanoi, the Head of the Center, Hoang Kim Phung, said it was preparing in terms of training and equipment for the engineering and military medical units to join UN missions. Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Herve Ladsous, said the UN had discussed the possibility that Vietnam may assign a field hospital and groups of sappers to join missions when asked. He also touched upon the UN’s increasing demand for peacekeeping forces. Mr. Ladsous said: “During the opening of the General Assembly in September this year, which is the 70th anniversary of the United Nations, there will be a high-level summit on peacekeeping American President has offered to preside. That will be an opportunity for new contributors to state their desire to be more involved and to bring all the capacities that we need. Indeed, the goal is to help all the new contributors and Vietnam first among them to be able to contribute to the maximum of their ability. And can only reinforce the strategic partnership with the result that more lives will be protected and a path to peace will be smoother”.
