US-China summit unlikely to achieve breakthrough

(VOVWORLD) - US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet virtually on Monday for a discussion that both sides hope will provide some relief from the rising tensions between the world's two largest economies.

Ahead of the meeting, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said the two leaders will exchange views on bilateral relations and issues related to their shared interests.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement last Friday that the two leaders will discuss ways to responsibly manage the competition between the US and China, and ways to work together where their interests align.

According to the statement, President Biden will make clear US intentions and priorities and be clear and candid about the concerns with China.

Analysts say they don’t expect a major breakthrough right at the meeting, but it could lay a foundation for turning US-China relations step by step from confrontation to cooperation.
