He will meet with senior Chinese officials in Shanghai and Beijing to discuss a range of bilateral, regional, and global issues, including the crisis in the Middle East, Russia’s conflict with Ukraine, cross-Strait issues, and the South China Sea (called the East Sea in Vietnam).

The Secretary will also discuss ongoing work to fulfill the commitments made by Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping at last November’s summit on resuming counternarcotics cooperation and military-to-military communication, among other issues. 

The commitments also reiterated the importance of the United States and China responsibly managing competition, even in areas where the two countries disagree.
