The US had severed all direct military contact with Russia before Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine in 2022, which marked the most intense confrontation between Russia and the West since the height of the Cold War.

"Maintaining dialogue between militaries is an important factor in global stability and peace, which can only be achieved through strength, and provides a means for increased transparency and de-escalation," the statement added.
