The move aims to reduce noise in Atsugi, which is located in an urban area. After the relocation, the number of US soldiers and their family members in Iwakuni city will exceed 10,000, accounting for 10 percent of the city’s population. Some F35 stealth jet fighters will also be deployed to the Iwakuni base later this month.
