(VOVworld) - President Barack Obama launched a full-throated defense of open immigration policies Tuesday, hailing it as America's "oldest tradition" amid a fierce election-fueled row over tighter rules.

Mr. Obama said it remained at the core of the US national character, oldest tradition, and is part of what makes them exceptional.

Meanwhile, the US leaves  open the possibility to adjust the visa waiver program, part of the state budget bill for 2016. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said the bill may include a reform bill for the visa waiver program which enables millions of visitors to enter the US without a visa. But Mr. Reid said the bill is not likely to hinder the White House’s policy to receive Syrian refugees.
