Independent candidate Bernie Sanders of Vermont has won re-election to the US Senate, easily defeating Republican Lawrence Zupan and 7 other candidates. Democrat Senator Tim Kaine beat the Republican challenger 57 percent to 43 percent in Virginia. New Jersey Democrat Bob Menendez was also reelected to the US Senate, as was Ohio Democrat Sherrod Brown.
In the US House of Representatives, with most of the votes counted, Democrats had 219 seats while Republicans had just 193 seats. If the midterm election was a referendum on President Trump, there seems to be a shift away from the President, but one thing is clear: American voters remain bitterly divided about the direction he is taking the country.
