US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said the deal covers agriculture, industrial tariffs, and digital trade. Auto tariffs will remain unchanged. Trump said Japan agreed to buy excess US corn that is burdening farmers as a result of the tariff dispute between Washington and Beijing.
The Japanese leader said more work remains, but he expressed optimism that it will be finished by the time the UN General Assembly meets next month.
