US commits to NATO mutual defense

(VOVWORLD) - US President Donald Trump said the US is committed to the mutual defense of NATO members.

He made the statement at a joint conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in the US on Friday. During last month's visit to NATO headquarters  in Brussels, Trump had not publicly mentioned US support for the NATO charter on mutual defense. Instead, he criticized ally countries for failing to increase their defense expense to at least 2% of gross domestic product (GDP). Right after his inauguration as US President, Trump said NATO was an “outdated” coalition model.
