The organizations have been implicated in China’s campaign targeting Uighurs and other predominantly Muslim minorities in the autonomous region of Xinjiang.

Among the blacklisted agencies and companies are Xinjiang province's Public Security Bureau, together with 19 other government agencies.

The 28 entities include video surveillance company Hikvision, which has been added to Washington’s blacklist in a way similar to the way US moved against smartphone giant Huawei earlier this year.

The listed agencies will not be allowed to buy US products or import American technology without Washington’s permission.

The same day, the Chinese Commerce Ministry asked the US to immediately correct mistakes of interfering in China’s internal affairs and to remove Chinese entities from the blacklist.

A spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce said the Uighurs issue is an internal affair and relates to national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity and that no other country has the right to get involved. He said China will take steps to safeguard its interests.
