At a signing ceremony on September 25th in New York, US Secretary of State John Kerry called it an important milestone in maintaining world peace and keeping weapons away from terrorists and extremists by enhancing export control.
Kerry said that the Treaty helps strengthen US security and establish a global security network without hurting legal arms trade. However, this document needs the approval of the US Senate to take effect. Previously, at the meeting of the UN General Assembly in April, the ATT received three no votes from Iran, North Korea and Syria and 23 abstentions votes including China, India, and Russia.
