Over the past 40 years, the US has been committed to providing the fullest possible accounting for the missing soldiers, McKeague said, and this humanitarian effort has been sustained because of the cooperation of the Vietnamese government.

Collaboration began a decade before the re-establishment of formal diplomatic relations and continues to be a foundation for the strong partnership the two countries have forged, McKeague said.

He noted that, because of this enduring cooperation, the US has accounted for 752 Americans missing in Vietnam during the war and has brought their remains home to their families.

Over the last decade US-Vietnam collaboration has led to the identification of 35 missing personnel, 19 from joint field work, one from a US partner mission, and 15 from Vietnamese sources.
