(VOVWORLD) - The UN Security Council urged Congo's government on Wednesday to keep an agreement to hold a presidential election by the end of the year, warning that failure to do so will increase the risk of insecurity and instability in the country and the region.

The Security Council statement stressed the importance of organizing a peaceful, credible, inclusive, and timely election leading to a peaceful transfer of power.

If such an election is held this year, it will be Congo's first democratic transition. Concerns are growing, however, that the plan is unraveling. The head of the electoral commission said this month that the vote will likely not be held this year.
