(VOVWORLD) - More than 1 million people have fled Sudan to neighboring states and people inside the country are running out of food and dying due to lack of health care after four months of conflict, the United Nations warned on Tuesday.

“The situation is spiraling out of control," UN agencies said in a joint statement. The UN estimates that over 4.3 million Sudanese people have been forced to flee since the conflict erupted in April. More than 4,000 have been killed, including civilians. It is estimated that nearly 25 million Sudanese people, half of them are children, are in need of urgent humanitarian assistance and protection.

So far, only 3 million of them have received support from the UN and its partners. The World Food Program said the Sudan conflict has pushed over 20 million people into severe acute hunger, with 6.3 million of them "one step away from famine."

Earlier this week, Sudan’s Health Ministry said services in some 200 hospitals across the country have been suspended due to the armed conflict and increasing risks of large-scale outbreaks of infectious diseases.
