(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Saturday called on greater support of the international community to help millions of Somalis, who are facing many catastrophic threats from conflicts, natural disasters, and the possibility of infecting COVID-19.

More than 220,000 Somalis have been internally displaced due to armed conflict and natural disasters since the start of this year, bringing the total number of people being forced to flee their homes to 2.6 million, the UN Refugee Agency said.

Somalia currently has 928 confirmed COVID-19 infections, including 44 deaths. UNHCR said that Somalia's weak health system cannot cope with the rapid spread of the pandemic.

It called on the international community to donate 745 million USD to protect and help fled people around the world.
