UN Security Council has 5 new non-permanent members

(VOVWORLD) - Algeria, Guyana, South Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia were elected non-permanent members of the UN Security Council by UN the General Assembly on Tuesday.

Representatives of 192 countries voted to fill three Council seats allocated to the Africa and Asia-Pacific groups, one for Eastern Europe, and one for Latin America and the Caribbean.

Eastern Europe was the only area with two candidates - Slovenia and Belarus.

The five newly-elected countries will begin their two-year term on January 1, 2024.
