The draft resolution submitted by France and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) requests the extension of sanctions against Mali and the mandate of the Panel of Experts responsible for monitoring the African country. The missions will expire on August 31 and September 30, 2024, respectively.

The draft received 13 votes in favor in the UN Security Council, but was defeated by Russia's veto and China abstaining.

To be adopted, a UN Security Council resolution needs to receive a minimum of 9 votes in favor and no veto from any of the 5 UN Security Council member states including UK, Russia, US, France, and China.
