(VOVworld) - Both Israel and Palestinian militant groups may have committed grave abuses of international humanitarian law during the 2014 war in the Gaza Strip that may amount to war crimes. This was the conclusion of a new report from the United Nations on the Gaza war, released on Monday.
According to the report, the UN Independent Commission of Inquiry said that "substantial information" and "credible allegations" indicated that both sides committed war crimes during the conflict, which left more than 2,200 Palestinians, most of them civilians, and 73 Israelis, most of them soldiers, dead.
The report, which was released after a one-year investigation, said that during the Gaza war’s 51 days, Israel conducted more than 6000 air strikes and fired about 50,000 mortar shells, while Palestinian militias fired 4,800 rockets and 1,700 mortar shells at Israel. More than 550 children were killed in attacks targeting civilians.
The report called on Israel to supply detailed information to an “independent, international commission of inquiry" for independent evaluation during the regular session of the UN Human Rights Council on June 29.
