UN releases first report on fight against IS

Jeffrey Feltman, the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, said in the first-ever briefing to the Council on UN counter-terrorism efforts against IS and its affiliates. Mr. Feltman highlighted significant detection on IS’s activities. The report stressed that dealing with IS was the responsibility of the UN and other international organizations. Thus, UN members need to exchange timely intelligence information, implement the UN Security Council’s related resolutions and further cooperate with private sectors to deal with threats from IS.

In another development, US Defence Secretary left Washington on Tuesday for Europe to chair a meeting in Brussels of defence ministers of counter-IS coalition to review military campaign against IS in Syria and Iraq. 27 countries which took part in the coalition and contributed to 18-month military campaign will attend the meeting. Apart from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, France, Britain and Australia, 21 other countries will attend as observers.
