19 million people were forced to flee last year – the biggest annual jump on record – raising the total to 108.4 million by the end of last year, the UNHCR said in its annual Forced Displacement report.
Before the Syria conflict began in 2011, there were 40 million refugees and internally displaced people, a number that had remained stable for about 20 years. But that number has risen each year since.
The report said 1 of every 74 people has had to flee their home.
