According to the Global Humanitarian Overview for 2024, conflicts, climate emergencies and the collapse of many economies are burdening the most vulnerable groups.
While the world is focusing on the conflict in the Gaza Strip, the entire Middle East, Sudan, and Afghanistan are also hot spots in need of large-scale humanitarian relief operations.
But the UN had to reduce the size of its annual mobilization fund and the number of beneficiaries next year due to reduced donations.
This year, the humanitarian system is facing a major funding crisis, with just over one-third of the 57 billion USD required to provide aid funded last year. With the money, some 128 million people received life-saving assistance in 2023.
2023 will end in a few weeks. It is likely that this will be the first year the annual amount of charity for humanitarian funds has decreased since 2010.
As a result, the UN has reduced the amount of mobilization to 46.4 billion USD for 2024 and will focus on providing the most essential groups of items.
