During his visit to Tokyo, Guterres met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and both leaders underscored that denuclearizing the Korean peninsula is vital for peace and stability in the region. He said that Security Council resolutions need to be fully implemented not only by North Korea but also by involved parties, adding that the measures are crucial to ensure that sanctions are put in place in order to resolve the current situation.
He affirmed that unity of the Security Council is crucial, saying it is also important to allow diplomatic engagement toward a peaceful resolution.
