(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations Human Rights Council opened its regular session in Geneva, Switzerland, on Monday, where UN human rights chief Volker Turk addressed global challenges like rising tensions, misinformation, inequality, and climate change.

Turk said the world is at a fork in the road. It can sleepwalk into a dystopian future or it can wake up and turn things around for the good of humanity and the planet, he added.

He said votes matter and urged every voter to ask themselves which political platform or candidate will work hardest for the human rights of everyone.

The new normal, he said, cannot be endless, vicious military escalation and increasingly horrifying, technologically advanced methods of warfare, control, and repression.

He warned against a free-for-all spread of disinformation that smothers facts and the ability to make free informed choices.
