Vietnam’s initiative garnered widespread support from UN member countries, with 138 nations co-sponsoring the resolution. Bulgaria, El Salvador, Jamaica, Kenya, and Luxembourg co-authored the resolution with Vietnam.
The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) expressed their support for the initiative and pledged to actively participate in associated activities supporting the spirit of the resolution.
During the introduction of the resolution to the General Assembly, Vietnamese Ambassador to the UN Dang Hoang Giang underscored the importance of play in human development and social life, saying that play contributes to the comprehensive mental and physical development of children, who represent the future of humanity. He said he hopes that this initiative will foster a commitment to implementing the UN 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.
The resolution establishing an International Day of Play represents a significant advancement in raising global awareness of children’s rights and has a special significance for Vietnamese children. The addition of an international holiday in June, which has been designated the "Action Month for Vietnamese Children", will bolster meaningful and practical activities aimed at protecting the rights of Vietnamese children.
