(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Friday declared that the crisis in the Middle East has become a severe humanitarian emergency, stressing that all civilians fleeing the conflict must be ensured safety.

According to UNHCR, the crisis began on February 28 when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran, causing the conflict to expand and forcing many people to flee their homes.

Ayaki Ito, a senior UNHCR official, said the escalation of hostilities and recent attacks have triggered significant displacement. About 100,000 people have been displaced in Iran in the first days of the conflict, while nearly 100,000 people have been displaced in Lebanon and tens of thousands of Syrian refugees have fled back across the border.

Ito called for an immediate regional response to the humanitarian crisis and urged all parties to implement a ceasefire and create an opportunity for peace.
