The mission said efforts to improve security in Haiti will only result in lasting progress if they are accompanied by progress toward the organization of credible, participatory, and inclusive elections. Political stability is necessary to improve the overall situation in Haiti, it said.
The mission commended the continued efforts of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM)’s Eminent Persons Group to ensure a successful transition in Haiti, and reiterated its commitment to support efforts to restore the confidence of the Haitian people in their authorities.
Decades of political instability in Haiti has recently been exacerbated by severe violence. Most of the capital Port-au-Prince is now controlled by armed gangs, severely hindering relief efforts for those in need.
