The Scottish National Party is planning to turn the next general election into a de-facto vote on independence. The vote will take place in October of next year with the main question being "Should Scotland become an independent country?".

The British government, which oversees constitutional matters, has consistently refused to give the Scottish government the power to hold a referendum on independence. London insists that the 2014 referendum, in which 55% of Scots opposed independence, was a definitive answer.
