Typhoon Molave: Search and rescue operation underway

(VOVWORLD) - Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong, and provincial leaders had an emergency meeting on Wednesday night following a severe landslide in a mountainous commune of Quang Nam province that left 55 people missing.

Deputy Prime Minister Dung asked localities and units to mobilize forces, vehicles, and equipment to find the victims but with precautions. He said, “First of all, the accident location must be identified. During the search and rescue process, safety must be ensured. We learn from experiences. We are very careful and attentive, but don’t slow down the search and rescue operation.”

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has issued a dispatch regarding the rescue of victims buried in Tra Leng commune. He asked the National Committee for Natural Disaster Response and Search and Rescue to work with local authorities and the Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee to take any measure necessary to promptly rescue the victims.

The Ministry of Defense has deployed two naval ships and two fisheries surveillance vessels from Cam Ranh to rescue two boats of Binh Dinh, which sank in the sea on Tuesday.

Typhoon Molave on Wednesday afternoon made a landfall in the central provinces, causing huge damage.

The storm destroyed or uproofed tens of thousands of houses, damaged the solar power system in Binh Dinh province, and caused severe landslides in many localities. Floodwater of rivers from Thua Thien - Hue to Binh Dinh, Kon Tum and Gia Lai rose above alert level 1, some rivers reaching alert level 2 or 3. Strong winds have brought down many big trees and ripped roofs off hundreds of houses in Quang Ngai and Quang Nam, center of the storm.
