(VOVworld)- The Philippines’s government and citizens are trying to recover from serious damage caused by super typhoon Haiyan. The storm displaced about 4.4 million people in Leyte, East Samar, Eastern and Middle Visayas, Bicol, and the northern part of the Mindanao peninsula. More than 10 thousand people have died, mainly in the city of Tacloban.

Valerie Amos, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator said that UN has pledged to help the Philippines recover from the disaster. A UN Emergency Relief team arrived in Tacloban Sunday morning to assess the damage and coordinate international relief. 60 tons of medical equipment and tents from UNICEF will be delivered to the Philippines on Tuesday and more relief staff are on the way. The British government promised 9.6 million USD for relief activities. The Canadian government will send 4.7 million USD for essential supplies such as food, blankets, clean water, and medicine. New Zealand’s government announced humanitarian aid worth 125,000 USD to help the International Red Cross provide emergency services to people in damaged areas. The New Zealand Red Cross pledged to provide more than 412,000 USD to the Philippines. The World Bank and the European Council also committed to themselves to aid the disaster relief.

Vietnam's President Truong Tan Sang and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung cabled messages of condolence to Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III on Sunday for the massive loss of life and property caused by typhoon Haiyan. The leaders affirmed that Vietnam stands with the Filipino people at this time. The Vietnamese government has offered 100,000 USD in emergency relief to Philippine victims of typhoon Haiyan, and said it will consider additional measures to help the Philippines. The Vietnamese leaders expressed their hope that the government and people of the Philippines will soon recover from the disaster. Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh sent a message of sympathy to his Philippine counterpart Albert Del Rosario.
