Turkey proposes Russia-Ukraine-US summit

(VOVWORLD) -Turkey has proposed hosting a summit of the leaders of Russia, Ukraine and the United States as it strives to broker a deal to end Russia's three-year conflict with Ukraine.

"We sincerely think that it is possible to cap the first and second direct Istanbul talks with a meeting between US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, under the mediation of Turkish President Recept Tayyip Erdogan," Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said during a visit to Kyiv on Friday.

Kremlin spokesman Dimitry Peskov however pushed back against the idea of a face-to-face meeting involving Putin and Zelenskyi.

"Direct negotiations between the two countries must first yield results" before such a summit can happen, he said.

According to the spokesman, the Russian delegation would be travelling to Istanbul for talks with Ukraine on Monday morning. Ukraine, however, has not announced whether it will take part in the talks or not.
