Trump impeachment trial nears its end

(VOVWORLD) - The US Senate on Monday began moving toward a final vote on impeachment charges against President Donald Trump.

Last Friday, the Senate voted not to call any witnesses or allow any new evidence in President Trump’s impeachment trial.

With a 51-49 advantage, the Republican-controlled Senate stopped Democrats’ attempt to hear testimony from witnesses, including former national security adviser John Bolton, who claims to have first-hand knowledge of Trump’s efforts to pressure Ukraine to investigate political rival Joe Biden.

The Democrat-controlled House of Representatives formally charged Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress last December, making him the third president in US history to be impeached. President Trump has denied wrongdoing and has accused Democrats of attempting a coup.

Democrats say Bolton was a central piece in last year’s Ukraine drama. Mr. Bolton has said he is prepared to testify. Bolton left the White House last September due to a disagreement over President Trump’s foreign policy.

The Senate is almost certain to acquit Trump of the charges, as a two-thirds Senate majority is required to remove Trump and none of the chamber’s 53 Republicans have indicated they will vote to convict.
