The ranking is based on votes from over 757,000 readers in the latest Condé Nast Traveler’s 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards, an annual survey by the magazine that provides information about luxury travel, hotels, restaurants, and other related topics.
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said in a statement that receiving such recognition two years in a row reflects Tokyo’s appeal and potential for further growth.
He pointed to Tokyo’s mix of history and contemporary culture — from gardens built during the Edo Period (1603-1867) to sushi restaurants, manga, anime — as the key to its international standing. Koike said Tokyo will continue to refine this appeal to welcome even more visitors and help them create many wonderful memories.
In the Condé Nast top 10 ranking, which excludes US cities, Kyoto ranked second, followed by Cape Town, Singapore, and Seoul.
