The shallow quake struck about 165km south-southwest of the town of Ternate in North Maluku province, according to the US Geological Survey. Hundreds of people are taking shelter in several schools, government buildings and high ground. Local officials said there is no threat of a tsunami but the people should be cautious as aftershocks are known to take place frequently.
